This year’s Corona autumn wave continues to build up. On Thursday, the Corona Commission also followed suit and classified the whole of Austria as high risk – i.e., orange. A week ago, the country was still yellow. Along with this, the provinces of Burgenland, Salzburg, Styria, and Vienna are also rated high risk. The states of Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg are ranked medium risk.

The load in intensive care units yesterday (Wednesday) was a Covid-specific 3.9 percent based on all reported adult intensive care beds in Austria. In normal wards, 5.1 percent of beds were occupied by Covid-infected patients. According to the forecast, there will be a further significant increase in cases and infected persons in the normal care area. If this trend continues, the Corona Commission recommends taking appropriate countermeasures promptly. Above all, an FFP2 mask obligation, especially in public transport, in the food trade, and pharmacies, should be considered as a comparatively little restrictive but well effective measure, the experts reiterated.

They also reiterated the importance of corona vaccination and available covid medications. Both significantly contribute to protecting against severe disease progression, thus protecting hospitals from overuse or staff absenteeism. In this context, the activities to increase the uptake of vaccination (launch of a new vaccination campaign) and the drugs (targeted information and education of the medical profession) are welcomed. The Commission recommends that further measures be taken to increase the uptake of Corona medicines, for example, by providing targeted information and education to the population, particularly vulnerable individuals.

The Corona Commission reiterates the importance of using the Covid-19 registry, as only reliable information on virulence, hospitalization rates, and duration can state vaccine effectiveness. Reliable, timely analyses, forecasts, and long-term simulations are made. The increased enrollment in this registry is welcomed, but there is still a need for optimization. The data and analyses can be viewed at https://datenplattform-covid.goeg.at/covid-19-register.

To protect oneself and others and counteract the rise in the number of cases, the Corona Commission again recommends wearing FFP2 masks, especially on public transport, in highly frequented indoor areas, and when in contact with vulnerable people. The still broad and low-threshold testing offer should again be used more frequently. A test should be carried out at least in the case of Covid-19-specific symptoms but also before and with vulnerable persons or larger groups. In the opinion of the Corona Commission, every individual can protect himself and the population well with these measures and thus make a valuable contribution to pandemic control.
