It was a loud signal that the Austrian pop scene gave on Saturday for the war victims in Ukraine at the benefit concert in Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium.
More than 40,000 fans of known Austrian pop singers attended the benefit concert. They consequently also listened to Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, who thanked them for their willingness to help.
Van der Bellen: “This war must be stopped!”
“Together we are sending a strong signal for peace, for democracy, a strong signal of solidarity with Ukraine, which was attacked by the Russian army, a signal of solidarity with people in need who have to flee this terrible war,” said Van der Bellen, who also addressed Russia: “This war must be stopped. President Putin, stop this war!” Because of the suffering, he said, one has to help. He was glad “that there is now this great willingness to help in our country.” Every note of today’s benefit concert ultimately makes it clear: “Peace will prevail. Democracy will prevail. Freedom will prevail.”
810,337 euros were donated for Ukraine at the benefit concert in Vienna
The event was organized by Nova Rock promoter Ewald Tatar, who could hand over a cheque for 810,337 euros to Volkshilfe and “Nachbar in Not.” This sum from ticket sales – the price of 19.91 euros per ticket referred to Ukrainian independence in 1991 – will increase, as income from gastronomy or merchandising will also be donated. The Federal Government has also supported the benefit concert with 80,000 euros to cover the production costs incurred to increase the income for aid in Ukraine.
