According to a study, the Omicron variant is as dangerous as previous mutants of the Coronavirus. “We found that the risks for hospitalization and mortality were nearly identical,” explains four scientists involved in the U.S. study from Massachusetts General Hospital, Minerva University, and Harvard Medical School.
The analysis is based on 130,000 Covid 19 patients over the past two years in several countries, including South Africa, Scotland, England, and Canada.
The researchers thus refute the previous assumption that the variant is more transmissible but less severe. “We found that the risks for hospitalization and mortality were almost identical across the different periods,” four researchers explained. However, the study authors cautioned that their study could have weaknesses: For example, they said it might have underestimated the number of vaccinated patients in recent COVID waves and the total number of infections because it excluded patients who performed rapid tests at home.
