Within one week, the number of infections in Austria has almost doubled.
Corona numbers are on the rise again in Austria. The EU’s epidemic prevention agency (ECDC) warns about the new omicron variants.
Experts predicted it weeks ago: the two new sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5 of the Omicron virus strain will cause a new Corona wave in Austria in summer. These mutations are already overrunning Portugal. At the end of May and the beginning of June, there were about 30,000 new infections per day in the famous vacation country.
30,000 new infections already in July
Complexity researcher Peter Klimek assumes that a similar situation awaits us in Austria. “It is plausible that we could end up in the order of 30,000 new infections per day in Austria,” the expert stressed to “Wien Heute” on Saturday. He expects that to be the case in July.
Declining vaccination protection
The EU’s Office for Disease Prevention (ECDC) warns against BA.4 and BA.5, saying the two variants are spreading faster in Europe than other subtypes.
Although BA.4 and BA.5 do not appear to pose a higher risk of severe disease, there is a risk that an increase in the number of cases alone could lead to higher numbers in hospitals and more deaths. The renewed growth could also be fueled by a slow decline in vaccination protection in the population.
On Monday, authorities reported 4,242 Corona infections in just 24 hours. Within a week, the numbers have now almost doubled. Conditions are also on the rise again in Germany. For example, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 105,840 new cases within 24 hours on Tuesday. The nationwide seven-day incidence increased from 332 the previous day to 447.
