After two years of Covid, a lot of vacation hunger has piled up. But many vacation destinations are currently struggling again with high Corona numbers.
It is true that, just in time for the start of summer, popular vacation destinations such as Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa have relaxed their entry regulations again. Nevertheless, the new Omicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5 could spoil the long-awaited break in no time. This is because several vacation destinations are currently struggling with high case numbers.
Most of Europe’s corona infections are currently taking place in Portugal. The seven-day incidence of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days is 1,133 (as of June 25). The highly contagious omicron subtype BA.5 is blamed for the skyrocketing case numbers. The hotspots are currently the greater Lisbon area, Madeira, and the Azores.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the coronavirus also circulates powerfully in Cyprus. In our neighboring country Italy, the highest case numbers are found in the region of Rome and on the island of Sardinia – see more in the picture gallery:
Where are the case numbers currently lower? In Croatia, almost 70 people per 100,000 inhabitants have been infected in the last seven days. In Andalusia, it is even less. Slovenia (184) and Spain (253) also currently report low case numbers. By comparison, the seven-day incidence in Austria is now 560 – and rising.
