Acute forest fire danger in Vienna: barbecue ban is effective immediately.
Due to the prevailing drought, the city of Vienna warns of a massively increased forest fire risk.
For this reason, smoking, barbecuing, handling open fires, and any fire lighting in the forest and its immediate vicinity are prohibited with immediate effect, said a release from the city’s Forestry and Agriculture Department on Thursday. The ban is in effect until further notice and will only be lifted in the event of sustained rain showers.

“Due to the drought, the risk of forest fires is particularly acute. Therefore, we appeal to the population to adhere to this ban to not endanger anyone,” underlined the City Councilor responsible for climate protection Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ). It was also requested for assistance: “Please keep your eyes open. If you discover a forest fire during a walk, please immediately alert the fire department under the emergency number 122,” said Forestry Director Andreas Januskovecz.

In addition, barbecuing is also prohibited at all public barbecue areas with immediate effect. Barbecuing in private gardens outside the danger zone of the forest is permitted, however. However, the city urged particular caution because of the drought. Foresters will strictly control the Viennese forest areas. It was also announced.
