One-time payment for pensioners: this is why many receive less than 500 euros

The pensioners’ association criticized the design of the one-time payment for seniors on Friday, which was also paid out at the beginning of September.

500-euro climate bonus is paid out
Because lower incomes get a minor inflation compensation, especially the equalization supplement is rather weakly up-doped in absolute numbers, which the red senior representatives consider “unsocial.” The PVA explained the mode.

Cost-of-living adjustment and climate bonus for pensioners
In June, the federal government’s 28 billion 3rd relief package was passed. For minimum pensioners, recipients of social welfare and unemployment benefits, there is a cost-of-living adjustment of 300 euros. Many pensioners who receive small or medium pensions are entitled to direct assistance of up to 500 euros. This payment has nothing to do with the 500-euro climate bonus, which is paid to all over-18s registered in Austria for at least 183 days in 2022.

Cost-of-living adjustment: less one-off payment with higher pensions
Accordingly, the one-time payment is due to all pension recipients if their total pension income is up to EUR 2,250. Suppose a person’s monthly income (total of all pensions from Austrian statutory pension insurance) is up to EUR 960. In that case, the particular one-time payment is due 14.2 percent of the total pension income. From 960 to 1,200, it is from 14.2 to 41.67 percent, increasing linearly. From 1,200.00 to 1,799.99 euros, a fixed amount of 500 euros is taken. From 1,800 to 2,250 euros, the payment decreases linearly from 27.77 percent to zero.

The staggered cost-of-living adjustment for pensioners
However, what bothers the pensioners’ association is how payments below 1,200 euros are handled. For example, with a pension of 1,100 euros, only 332 euros are paid out. With 1,050 euros, it is 257 plus.

According to the pensioners’ association, the approximately 200,000 recipients of a compensatory allowance (this year 1,030 euros gross) represent an additional unique feature. This is because they do not receive the one-time payment calculated for the 1,030 euros but only from their pension share. For example, a minimum pensioner has 400 euros of her own pension and receives 630 euros of compensatory allowance (in total, 1,030). However, she does not accept 250 euros as a one-time payment (based on 1,030 euros), but only 57 euros (based on 400 euros of her pension).
