The international driver’s license is an additional document to the national driver’s license and contains information about the ability to drive a motor vehicle in several languages. It allows international authorities to quickly determine whether you can drive a car and provides all the necessary information.
Why is an international driver’s license needed?
The international driver’s license authorizes you to drive a motor vehicle outside the EU and allows the resident authorities to verify this quickly and easily. Carrying an international driver’s license is required by many car rental companies.
When and how should I look for an international driver’s license?
Since some countries do not issue an international driver’s license to tourists, it is advisable to take care of it before starting your trip.
The document is recommended in countries outside Europe; in some countries (such as South Africa), it is even mandatory. The international driver’s license is available from automobile clubs. You need your (national) driver’s license, a photo, and about 20 euros.
The international driving license is valid for one year from the issue date and only in conjunction with the national driving license.
For the issuance, you need the following documents
your national driving license (original)
a passport photo
