Both hospital and infection figures continue to decline. However, these values provide only limited information about the incidence of infection. This is because the rapid antigen tests often performed before the PCR checks are increasingly delivering false-negative results.
At least at first glance, the number of Corona cases continues to decline. Six hundred twenty-five new findings were registered in Lower Austria on Monday. However, many more positives are likely to have gone undetected, according to experts. According to Waldviertel physician Susanne Rabady, also a member of the Corona Task Force at the Ministry of Health, false-negative results in rapid antigen tests are currently accumulating.
The causes
“This happens more often with the new Omicron variants and is mostly related to the quality of the tests. However, it is partly due to the type of smear test performed,” diagnoses the physician. It is recommended to have the corona checks performed in test streets or pharmacies. “Symptomatic people should test themselves daily and stay at home,” it says.
