The city of Vienna wants to counter the horrendous energy costs with a subsidy. From December 5, applications can be submitted for this.

The exploding energy costs bring many Viennese to the brink of despair, and not infrequently, horrendous bills leave the addressees helpless. The city wants to remedy the situation with an energy bonus, details of which were announced today by Peter Hacker, City Councillor for Social Affairs, and Peter Hanke (SP), City Councillor for Economic Affairs.

The city is spending around 130 million to relieve the burden on Viennese households. Single households with a gross annual income of no more than 40,000 euros or multi-person households with an income of up to 100,000 euros gross per year are eligible. A sum of 200 euros is paid out per household. The assistance can be applied for from December 5.

And this is how it works: Between November 29 and December 12, the city sends an information letter to every address in Vienna where one or more people registered their main residence on the cut-off date of November 10. The letter contains a password that is required for the online application. Persons who cannot submit an online application can contact the service telephone of the Department for Social Affairs, Social and Health Law (01 4000 8040, from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.). The grant will be transferred to the account indicated in the online application or paid by postal order – within a few days.

The application can be made online from December 5. Around 650,000 Viennese households fall within these income limits and are therefore eligible for subsidies – about two-thirds of all Viennese households. Anyone unsure whether they are entitled to the support can find out at www.wien.gv.at.

So far, 234,000 households have received direct financial support amounting to around 48 million euros – in the course of the Energy Cost Flat Rate, Energy Support Plus, and the Energy Bonus.

“The inflation in virtually all areas of life has become an enormous problem for many people in our city. Very many households suffer particularly from the sharp rise in energy prices,” said Social City Councilor Hacker. “The Energy Bonus 22 is intended to provide relief, not just for households with meager incomes. To be able to help quickly, applications are processed automatically, and payment is made within a few days.”

“With the Vienna Energy Bonus 22, we already created an additional fourth pillar of support for the Viennese in the summer. With this, we are taking another 130 million euros into our hands after the Vienna Energy Support of around 125 million euros,” adds Peter Hanke, City Councillor for Economic Affairs. “Around one million Viennese and two-thirds of all households in Vienna will benefit from the energy bonus. In this way, we are reaching far into the middle class and supporting people where they currently need it most.”
