There will probably be no white Christmas in any provincial capital this year. Along the northern Alps, the weather will be less than pleasant. This is the forecast.
Austria is currently caught between an extensive low-pressure area over the British Isles with precipitation and a high over southeastern Europe. With a westerly high-altitude flow, mild air masses of subtropical origin are feeling their presence in the mountainous areas, while cold air is lingering in the northeast and the southern basins.
In the middle of the week, a weak cold front sweeps across the country: While it cools down slightly in the middle altitudes, the cold air is finally pushed away in the lowlands, and the temperatures rise. The mild weather phase then lasts at least beyond Christmas. “There is “hardly any chance of a white Christmas” is the scathing rejection of the ZAMG meteorologists to this.
During the night, high fog will persist in the north and east and the southern basins, with some drizzle or snow drizzle locally. Otherwise, it will remain dry, and the sky will sometimes be apparent in the Alps. The wind will blow moderately from an easterly direction in the Danube region.
According to UBIMET, Wednesday will start dry today, but the sun will only appear in the mountains from the Tauern to the Rax. From Vorarlberg, light rain will spread eastward along the northern side of the Alps during the day. Especially in the Danube region and the eastern lowlands, there is still a risk of slippery conditions due to freezing rain. Highs will range between -1 and +8 degrees.
On Thursday, especially north of the Alps, some rain will sometimes fall and only in the high mountains and a few snowflakes. In the southern half, a charming sun-cloud mix will set in; it will be the sunniest south of the main ridge of the Alps. However, in the lowlands and basins, you have to expect fog again more often at the beginning. A weak to moderate southwesterly wind will blow on the northern side of the Alps. Temperatures will rise to 2 to 12 degrees.
Friday will often be cloudy and wet, especially on the northern side of the Alps. Snow will fall only in the high mountains; the sun will most likely appear briefly from East Tyrol to Carinthia and western Styria. The wind blows weak to moderate in the Waldviertel, and towards Lake Constance, also brisk from the southwest and with 3 to 13 degrees, it remains very mild.
The rain will sometimes fall on Christmas Eve, especially along the northern Alps. The snow line will drop to about 1700 m during the day. Some sunshine is most likely in the south from East Tyrol to Bucklige Welt and later in the Waldviertel. Otherwise, it will remain mostly cloudy. The wind will be moderate to fresh north of the Alps, occasionally brisk to strong from the west. With 5 to 15 degrees, it will also be unusually mild.
The forecast of temperature highs for the state capitals is as follows:
➤ Vienna: 13 degrees
➤ St. Pölten: 11 degrees
➤ Eisenstadt: 11 degrees
➤ Linz: 11 degrees
➤ Graz: 10 degrees
Klagenfurt: 5 degrees
Salzburg: 10 degrees
➤ Innsbruck: 9 degrees
➤ Bregenz: 12 degrees
