From 2023, all plastic packaging such as yogurt pots, plastic bags or tubes will be collected together with plastic bottles and beverage cartons throughout Austria in the yellow garbage can or the yellow bag.
From 2023, everything will go into the yellow garbage can
So far, light packaging has been handled differently in the provinces, and in Vienna, for example, it has been incinerated as residual waste. Vienna is also considering placing blue-yellow garbage cans in residential buildings in the future but is initially only testing this in a small part of Favoriten.
From 2023: Plastic packaging to be collected throughout Austria
In 2025, the joint collection of plastic and metal packaging will also be mandatory throughout Austria. The provinces of Carinthia, Lower Austria, Salzburg and Vienna, and some Upper Austria districts will implement this step as early as 2023. The remaining federal states will continue to collect plastic and metal packaging separately in the next two years in the yellow garbage can, yellow bag, and blue garbage can.
