Meteorologists warned on Wednesday of coming partly large amounts of fresh snow. “In the next few days, moist air will flow into Austria from the northwest, accumulating on the northern side of the Alps and bringing heavy snowfall here at times,” Christian Pehsl of Geosphere Austria (formerly ZAMG) explained in a statement. Therefore, there could be problems on roads, railroad lines and in the power supply, for example, if trees fall under the snow load.
“Especially in the area from Vorarlberg to northern Tyrol, Salzburg and Upper Austria to the Mostviertel and Upper Styria, 20 to 50 centimeters of fresh snow are already expected by Friday, especially at higher altitudes, in isolated cases around 100 centimeters. Below 1,000 meters above sea level, the snowfall may turn into rain, especially towards Friday, and the snow amounts will be smaller,” Pehsl reported.
According to Geosphere Austria, the weather situation, with sometimes strong to stormy winds, will likely continue until the beginning of next week. Also, from Saturday to Tuesday, bring from the northwest further squadrons with moist air, especially on the northern side of the Alps, at times heavy snowfall. The further development is still very uncertain. From the current point of view, the weather calms down on Wednesday, and sunny and very cold winter weather prevails in the second half of the week.
