Booster vaccination with matched Corona vaccine significantly lowers the risk of death compared with unvaccinated.

Corona vaccine matched to Omicron BA.4/BA.5 is significantly more effective than a “booster” with the old un-matched Covid vaccine (reduced mortality by a factor of 5.4), a U.S. study finds.

The study was conducted by scientists at the U.S. government-run Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC/Atlanta/Georgio). They analyzed data on 21.3 million people from 24 states over 12 who had covid-19 between October 2021 and December 2022. There were 115,078 corona deaths. This was evaluated in the study, which appeared in the agency’s official journal, according to the vaccination status of those who became ill and died.

Although a high infection rate was shown with the omicron wave through BA.4/BA.5 in the U.S., the effect of a “booster” with an adapted Corona vaccine was fully felt in severe illnesses. From Sept. 18 to Dec. 24, 2022, when the BA.4/BA.5 variants dominated vaccination events, the team determined a 2.8-fold higher risk of infection for unvaccinated individuals than for unvaccinated bivalent boostered individuals. Compared with monovalent boostered individuals, the risk was 2.5-fold higher. The additional protection of bivalent Corona vaccination against infection with BA.4/BA.5 was therefore limited,” the German Medical Journal wrote on Tuesday.

14-fold lower mortality risk with adapted Corona vaccines
The picture was different regarding preventing serious illness and death; they said: “Unvaccinated individuals had a 14.1-fold higher risk of dying after infection with SARS-CoV-2 than individuals who received the bivalent ‘booster.’ Compared with persons who had received a monovalent ‘booster,’ the risk of death was increased by a factor of 5.4. The relative risks were (statistically; note) significant in all calculations because of the large numbers of cases.”

The greatest protective effect was in the 65- to 79-year-old age group. There, Covid-19 mortality was 8.3 times higher in the unvaccinated than in a booster with the old Corona vaccine. Compared to the vaccine adapted to Omicron BA.4/BA.5 and a booster with it, mortality was even 23.7-fold higher in the unimmunized.
