Car insurances in Austria are up to 112 percent more expensive than Germany. They can cost up to 94 percent more than in Switzerland, the online comparison portal durchblicker.at has calculated.
For a Skoda Octavia, policyholders pay in this country for liability and comprehensive insurance about, in the cheapest case, 766 euros; in Germany, the model’s insurance is only 361 euros.
durchblicker.at compare car insurance policies for the three cars most frequently registered in 2022 without considering taxes and duties. In absolute terms, the insurance for the Tesla Y is the most expensive in Austria in a country comparison. Third-party liability and comprehensive insurance cost 1,632 euros in Austria, almost 800 more than in Switzerland. For the Toyota Yaris, the premiums in Austria are still about half (44 to 52 percent) more expensive than in Germany or Switzerland.
Large differences also in Austria
But even within Austria, the premiums differ. Thus there are differences of up to 700 euros with the Toyota Yaris, up to 780 euros with the Skoda Octavia, and even up to 1,700 euro difference with the Tesla Y.
Causes for the price differences, there are several, he said. “In detail, there are indeed differences in national contract law, risk assessment, compensation systems and claims settlement. But on the whole, insurance services are comparable,” explained Patrick Madl, head of insurance at durchblicker.at in the release. In Austria, however, insurance companies have more self-distribution than in most other countries, so that Austrians would change insurance companies less frequently than in other countries.
He also said that index adjustments are taking a decent hit in Austria due to inflation. “In the case of new contracts, the inflation-related price increases have been somewhat smaller in some cases, and in some cases the insurance companies are not planning the next premium adjustment for their new tariffs until April. However, this could be as high as 12 percent, which could be quite severe in some cases,” says Madl.
