Easter time is travel time. It is not uncommon to travel abroad by car. But drivers better pay close attention to the traffic regulations there – because some offences can cost money.

If you have trouble keeping your foot on the gas at the speed limit in your home country, you might have even more problems abroad. Because there, traffic violations are much more expensive, according to ADAC. Thus, especially in the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland, as well as in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy, sometimes drastic penalties are threatened.

Examples: Anyone who drives 20 km/h out of town too fast will pay 585 euros in Norway, 215 euros in Sweden, 200 euros in Finland, 195 euros in the Netherlands, 180 euros in Switzerland and 175 euros in Italy. In Germany, on the other hand, the fine starts at 60 euros.

In other countries, parking violators have to dig deep into their pockets. For example, the fine starts at 100 euros in the Netherlands and in Poland at 110 euros. You have to pay a little less in Switzerland (from 40 euros) than in Italy (45 euros). It is cheap in Germany, where such a violation is punished with 10 euros.

Alcohol-related offences also become very expensive.

Anyone caught with 1.5 per mile in Italy must even fear the expropriation of their car if the owner and driver are identical. The situation is similar in Denmark from 2.0 per mile. In Sweden, drivers with a blood-alcohol level of 1.0 per mile can even spend a month in jail. From 1.2 per million in Spain, even three months come from it.

Making a phone call without a hands-free system results in a fine of 850 euros in Norway and 380 euros in the Netherlands. Spain sanctions this with at least 200 euros and Italy 165 euros. Germany is comparatively cheap again, with fines starting at 100 euros.
