Thunderstorm danger on the weekend in Austria! A powerful thunderstorm is heading for parts of the country – temperatures are dropping significantly.

A Low-pressure system, “Markus,” with a core over northern Germany, will also cause changeable April weather in Austria on Sunday. The weather today: low-pressure influence will persist, and colder air of polar origin will gradually seep from the northeast. Thus, snow will again be a topic, especially on Monday nights in the Northern Alps. The new week will then bring undercooled but largely calm spring weather.

It will likewise bring repeated precipitation, especially along the northern Alps. At first, snow will fall only above 1200 meters. However, the snow line will drop from the north to middle altitudes in the evening. Otherwise, it will be unsettled with rain showers. In addition, individual thunderstorms are possible from Lower Carinthia to Styria during the day. The wind will be moderate to fresh in the east, occasionally strong from the northwest, and change to northerly directions during the day.

Monday will start from Vorarlberg to the Vienna Woods with dense clouds and unproductive snowfall down to low elevations. Away from them, the sun often shines. During the day, it will dry up, and occasionally the sun will shine in the Northern Alps. In the east, a strong northerly wind will blow; in the eastern lowlands, individual gale-force gusts are possible. In East Tyrol and Carinthia, northern foehn will appear in predestined valleys. Temperatures will drop noticeably.

Tuesday will be mostly cloudy from the Tyrolean lowlands eastward to northern Burgenland, with a few snowflakes falling from time to time, especially from the Salzkammergut to the Wienerwald. It will remain dry in the west and south, with a mix of sun and clouds. The wind will be brisk to strong in exposed areas in the east, such as in the Buckligen Welt and the Joglland, also stormy from northerly directions. During the night, frost must be expected in many cases.
