Most people are convinced that children are simply part of a happy life. Happiness researchers have now found the opposite.
Love, marriage, buying a house and having children. For many, this is what a successful life looks like. Children enrich everyday life and make people happy. Now happiness researchers have discovered that having children does not always make you more comfortable. It is said that children do not always enrich life. On the contrary, they often make people unhappy.
A happy life without children
Having children can be a burden, both financially and, of course, psychologically. After all, parents must constantly take care of them, help them make decisions and help them find their way. Happiness researchers David Blanchflower and Andrew Clark used a survey of one million Europeans to investigate basic satisfaction over ten years. They found that many parents had to spend a lot of money on their offspring and were in a precarious financial situation. This is the reason why many became unhappier than happier overall as a result of their children. So, according to the study, the financial aspect is the factor that made it the most depressing.
Children are a big cost factor.
These days, you have to have a lot to offer your kids. A new iPhone, digital devices for school, university, etc. That can come at a huge cost. On average, a child costs 148,000 euros until it turns 18. This was researched by the Federal Statistical Office in 2018, as mentioned on the Commerzbank blog. Additional costs for larger living space, loss of earnings due to part-time work, etc., are not yet considered.
So to enjoy the existence of his children also, one should already deal with all possible costs before birth and save well.
