For weeks, scammers in Austria have been up to their mischief online and digitally. Now it is important to pay attention to a new crooks scam.

In recent months, there have been an increasing number of fraud attempts in Austria. The so-called “son/daughter trick” is particularly sophisticated. In a short message sent by SMS or Whatsapp, the crooks pretend to be the child of the person being contacted. Because the old cell phone is allegedly damaged, money must be transferred to an account. As before, gullible people fall for this scam.

However, fraudsters are also up to mischief in other ways. The LPD Carinthia now describes such a case. The cause case was a damaged 40-Jährige. She lost several thousand euros to the swindlers. This is the story behind it.

On April 05, 2023, a 40-year-old woman from Villach was contacted by phone by an unknown man. The latter stated that an online account with cryptocurrency with a deposit of tens of thousands of euros existed in the woman’s name and that she could have it paid out. She subsequently agreed to this and followed the instructions of the alleged employee of a financial management company.

The 40-year-old downloaded an app on her cell phone and gave the perpetrator access to data. The woman had to transfer a low four-digit euro amount to a Lithuanian account to get the deposit paid out. Three days later, the Villach woman debited money from a second account.

Subsequently, contact with the perpetrator broke off. The woman filed a complaint with the police. The investigations in this regard are ongoing.
