Border control in the Balkans: announcement by Nehammer
Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Faeser is said to have written to the EU Commission, informing it that a sustained decline in irregular migration to Central and Western Europe was not expected.

Germany justifies the extension of border controls with irregular migration
“It is worrying that 2022 saw a peak in detected irregular migration at the EU’s external borders since 2016,” the German interior minister said. Germany was again the main destination country in Europe last year, Faeser continued in her letter. Given the increase in migration, the accommodation situation in German states and municipalities has further worsened, she said. For this reason, she said, she felt compelled to order internal border controls on the main route of irregular migration to Germany for another six months, effective May 12.

Austria to extend border controls with Slovenia and Hungary
Earlier this week, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) announced that Austria plans to expand its border controls with Slovenia and Hungary.

There are no stationary checks of persons at the borders of the Schengen area, to which 26 European countries belong. In recent years, however, several states have taken advantage of an exemption and reintroduced partial border controls.
