The vacation season is approaching, so now is the right time to check whether the passport is valid.
It is advisable to apply now to avoid longer waiting times when applying for passports. “Anyone who needs a new passport during the summer vacations should ideally come as soon as possible to one of the passport service points in the municipal district offices, which can be selected at will,” recommends Jürgen Czernohorszky, the city councilor responsible.

Security passports are produced centrally for Austria.
Due to the high-security requirements, security passports are produced centrally for Austria at the Austrian State Printing Office. Issuance usually takes five working days. The new passport is delivered by mail to a desired address in Austria. It is quicker to issue and have an express passport or a one-day express passport – but these are more expensive than a “normal” passport.

“Even though there is always a strong run on passports during the vacation season, the passport service offices strive to fulfill the wishes of the customers* as quickly as possible,” assures Oliver Birbaumer, Head of District Office 2/20 and Public Relations of the district offices.

Vacation season is approaching: Freedom to travel does not mean freedom to have a passport.
Contrary to a widespread misconception, you need a travel document every time you leave Austria. This also applies to travel within the Schengen area, despite usually no border controls. However, border controls can be carried out anytime for public order and security reasons. Travel documents are either a passport or an identity card, not a driver’s license.

Opening hours of the Vienna Passport Service Centres
Since this year, travel documents can be applied for at the Vienna Passport Service Centers of the Municipal District Offices from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., without making an appointment. In addition, there is the possibility of reserving a specific position. This is possible Monday to Friday from 12:00 to 15:00 – on Thursday until 17:00.

All information about the Vienna Passport Service (e.g., the addresses and opening hours of the passport service points, the possibility of reserving an appointment online, the criteria for passport photos, and any other documents required for the application) can be found online at www.wien.gv.at/passservice. In addition, the Stadtservice Wien (Vienna City Service) will be happy to provide information at the telephone number 01/4000-4001.
