As of May 1, certain traffic violations are more expensive. In future, the organ mandate will cost 100 euros instead of 50 euros if drivers are caught using a cell phone without a hands-free device while driving. If payment is refused or drivers are caught in a speed trap with a cell phone in their hands, the fine can be up to 140 euros. Previously it was 72 Euro.
A violation of the obligation to use a seat belt in the car and a crash helmet on motorcycles or mopeds will, in future, cost 50 euros instead of the previous 35 euros as an organ mandate on the spot – a charge of up to 100 euros. In 2022, according to the Ministry of the Interior, 88,394 violations of the seat belt requirement were recorded throughout Austria. One hundred thirty thousand five hundred forty drivers were reported to the police for using the telephone without a hands-free device or were punished by an administrative penalty order. The higher penalties are not enough for Armin Kaltenegger, head of the legal department at the Austrian Road Safety Board (KFV). In an interview with the APA, he demanded that in the future, the violations can be punished by the report, just like other offences, and that a stop is unnecessary.
