With the upcoming update, Whatsapp introduces a new feature that many users have been eagerly waiting for. You can now use your account on up to four different smartphones simultaneously. Setting it up is still awkward, but it should soon become more accessible.
Many users have wanted to use a Whatsapp account on multiple smartphones for years. Until now, however, this was not possible because there was no secure solution. But now the time has come: Whatsapp has announced an update of its messenger in its blog, after which you can seamlessly continue chats when changing phones. This should also ensure that personal messages, media and calls are end-to-end encrypted. It also doesn’t matter if you use an Android or iPhone.
One can use up to four different smartphones with one Whatsapp account. All you have to do is link the accompanying phones to the primary Device. It is still necessary to scan a QR code on Whatsapp Web. To do so, open the additional settings in the Android app via the three-dot menu in the upper right corner; on iPhones, go to the settings in the app via the gear icon in the lower right corner. In both cases, you then select Linked Devices and then Add Device.
“In the coming weeks,” however, an alternative, much more accessible method is to be introduced, with which one has linked an additional smartphone in no time: One then enters one’s phone number on Whatsapp Web and receives a unique code for each other Device to connect it. For security reasons, all linked smartphones are automatically logged out if the primary Device is inactive “for an extended period of time.”
Whatsapp is already distributing the update; the first smartphones are said to have already received it. The update should be available for all users “in the coming weeks.”
