How often we should wash our bed linen is a question we don’t always agree on. You can find the answer in this article.
According to scientists, bedding picks up a lot of bacteria. When we sleep, we sweat and shed dead skin flakes. As a result, bacteria accumulate, and bed linen becomes a natural breeding ground for germs.
Even if we are unaware of it, our bed sheets can harbour bacteria and viruses and are far from the healthiest and most comfortable place in our home, even if it feels like it.
So, to sleep in a flawless environment and always have the feeling of fresh sheets, we follow step by step the advice of Michel Cymes, who explains the topic in detail at RTL France.
You should wash your sheets at least every two weeks
According to the doctor, you should change your sheets at least every two weeks, provided you have “impeccable personal hygiene.” Because even if we put on our pyjamas before bed, we live in those sheets for an average of 8 hours a night, moving around and sweating, even if we don’t realize it.
The same goes for your favourite and most comfortable piece of clothing, your pyjamas, which you should wash more often than you think. You don’t have to run a marathon or jump in the mud to get dirty clothes.
Changing your bed linen is one of those tasks that few people like to do – even though some people have mastered a fantastic technique that allows them to change their comforter cover in less than a minute.
Also, remember to wash your pillow and comforter. Although you don’t need to wash them as often as your bedding, you should wash your pillow if it’s yellow. There are simple methods to do this. With the comforter, on the other hand, it is enough if you wash it once a season.
How to get rid of all viruses and bacteria?
The doctor advises us to give up certain bad habits we probably all have! The first thing many do when pulling off their sheets is to crumple the comforter cover, fitted sheet and pillowcases into a ball. However, when going to the machine, we often press this pile of dirty laundry against our clean clothes!
Michel Cymes advises putting dirty sheets in a designated basket right after they are stripped so they don’t come into contact with the clean laundry.
As for the washing temperature, it is better not to wash below 40°C to be sure to remove all the impurities, bacteria and other dust mites in our laundry. At a time when we catch the slightest virus, we can ensure that our sheets are thoroughly disinfected by washing them at 60°C.
The materials from which our bedding is made often tolerate high washing temperatures, so don’t be afraid to raise the temperature!
Some people should change their bedding more often
Realistically, not everyone will take this advice seriously. But some people must be more careful, as they are more sensitive than others. Here are a few factors you should consider to gauge how often you should wash your bedding:
Do you sweat excessively during the night? Then it would be best to change your sheets more frequently to prevent bacteria buildup. More than once a week is probably best for you.
Are you asthmatic or allergic to dust? Then it would be best if you changed your bedding weekly.
Can’t sleep without your furry pet? There is no need to banish it from the bed – regularly changing the bedding is quite enough.
Do you love to sleep naked? Then wash the sheets regularly!
