The institute, on the Porton Down National Research Laboratory site in southern England, will research pathogens for which there is not yet a vaccine or where immunization could be improved, such as influenza, Mpox or Hantavirus.
The new center should also help the U.K. prepare for “Disease X,” U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA) chief Jenny Harries said Monday. “Disease X” is the name given to an unknown pathogen that could cause a pandemic.
“We don’t know what it is”
“We don’t know what it is, but we can prepare for some virus families,” Harries said. “We’re trying to keep track of the ones we know about here. With Corona, for example, we’re still testing all the new variants with the vaccines provided to see if they’re still effective.” He said a Phase 1 clinical trial is also underway for a world-first vaccine against Crimean-Congo fever, a tick-borne virus that is fatal in many cases.
A public inquiry is currently underway to determine, among other things, whether the U.K. was adequately prepared for the Corona pandemic. Among other things, it has become clear that previous governments were more prepared for a flu pandemic than for other viruses.
