Exactly five weeks since the start of the third hard lockdown, new infection numbers in Austria remain very high. Exactly 1478 new infection cases have been reported since Friday, the Interior and Health Ministries reported Saturday. Thus, the seven-day average is 1385 cases added daily. Another 45 Covid-19 deaths have also been reported since Friday, bringing the total to 7703 people who have died from or with Covid-19 since the pandemic began.
For the first time since mid-October, the number of new infections within seven days is below 10,000. In total, 9696 people in Austria have become infected with SARS-CoV-2 in the past week. The seven-day incidence – the number of new infections per 100,000 population within seven days – was 108.9 on Saturday.
Per 100,000 population, 86.5 people have already died from or with Covid-19. Styria continues to record the most deaths at 127.5 and Carinthia at 111.2, while the fewest deaths are in Vorarlberg at 63.2 per 100,000 population and 67.6 in per 100,000 population in Lower Austria. Within the past week, 314 deaths were registered throughout Austria.
Continuing to decline at a low level is the number of Covid 19 patients in hospitals. In total, there were 1,682 sick people on Saturday, 65 fewer than on Friday and 166 fewer than last Saturday. Intensive care units required treatment for 296 people Saturday, two fewer than Friday and 27 fewer than a week ago.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 413,208 people have tested positive in Austria. Across Austria, 391,076 are considered recovered. The 1,478 new infections were offset by 1,600 recovered people on Saturday. Thus, 14,429 people were still actively infected across Austria, 167 fewer than on Friday. About six weeks ago – on December 20 – there were 30,290 active cases, twice as many as now.
Most new infections have been recorded in Lower Austria since Friday, with 317. Styria added 259 new cases, Vienna 241 and Upper Austria 238. Vienna included 13 follow-up reports from the previous days. Salzburg reported 168 additional SARS-CoV-2 infections. In all other provinces, there were fewer than 100. 88 new infections were registered in Carinthia, 63 in Vorarlberg, and only ten in Burgenland. In the easternmost province, only 34 people are thus confirmed actively infected on Saturday. In absolute numbers, the most are again in Styria with 2,211.
