In Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland, the new school year begins on September 4; in the remaining provinces, it starts on September 11.
Dates for the upcoming school year: October 31 is the first day of vacation
Austria’s autumn vacation falls between National Day (October 26) and All Souls’ Day (November 2) for the fourth year. This year, November 2 occurs on a Thursday. Therefore, many schools will probably be closed the next day as well.
This year, on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception occurs on a Friday, meaning students will naturally have a long weekend during Advent. The Christmas break begins on December 23 and ends on January 7. The deadline for submitting applications for school funding is December 31.
Semestral break
The semester break in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Vorarlberg takes place from February 3 to February 11. February 10–18 in Burgenland, Carinthia, Salzburg, and Tyrol; February 17–25 in Upper Austria and Styria.
Schoolchildren will have an Easter break from March 23 through April 1. The upcoming academic year’s May 1 Austrian National Holiday falls on a Wednesday. The German tests for the 2024 central graduation exams start the next day, May 2, and go through May 16 (Latin/Greek). The lengthy duration can be attributed to Ascension Day, which falls on May 9. This Thursday’s holiday coincides with the final test. Another Friday off from school is traditionally observed on the following Friday.
Vacation for Pentecost, May 18–20
Since Pentecost Monday is generally taught on Tuesdays since the establishment of the autumn holidays, the Pentecost holiday from May 18 to May 20 is no longer an actual holiday. (unless the school decides otherwise). The only exception is the weekend. May 30 is Corpus Christi, the last holiday before the end of the school year. Another possibility for a winding day and school autonomy is the following Friday.
The school year finishes very early; classes in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland close on June 28; in the remaining provinces, classes end on July 5. Sept. 2 and 9, 2024, will mark the beginning of the 2024–2025 academic year.
