Venice: Starting in 2024, day tourists in Venice will have to pay admission. The municipality’s tourism committee decided that tourists who do not stay overnight in the lagoon city must contribute five euros. The sum will be collected during a test phase over 30 days, mainly on public holidays and long weekends. The municipality announced that the exact days tourists will be asked to pay will be published in the next few weeks.

The aim is to regulate the tourist rush. On certain days, more than 100,000 tourists are in the lagoon city. The booking system should be tested in the next few weeks.

“We are aware of the urgency to find a new balance between the rights of those who live, study or work in Venice and those who visit the city. Therefore, at certain times and on certain days, there is a need for an innovative management of traffic flows that can curb daytime tourism,” commented the municipality’s tourism commissioner, Simone Venturini.

According to Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, the money will go primarily to the maintenance and cleaning of the historic city. Venice has been fighting the tourist onslaught for years, repeatedly trying different strategies to keep the crowds at bay.
