Austria will also control its borders with the Czech Republic from midnight. A spokesman for the Interior Ministry told APA on Tuesday afternoon in response to a question. The background will likely be Germany’s decision to introduce stationary border controls with the Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland. In the fight against illegal migration, Austria already controls its borders with Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia.
While controls on Hungary and Slovenia have been in place for years, the Czech and Slovak borders have only been controlled for comparatively shorter periods in the past. For example, the current controls to Slovakia were only introduced on October 4 and extended the previous week until the beginning of November.

Germany had begun on Monday evening with fixed controls at the border crossings to Poland and the Czech Republic. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser had previously announced that she also wanted to extend the controls at the Austrian border, which have been in place for years, by another six months.
