Drivers should prepare for wintry road conditions and adapt their driving accordingly. Skiing enthusiasts, on the other hand, should be delighted at the prospect of fresh powder snow, which will create ideal conditions for winter sports activities.

The forecast for Friday already brings us the cold snap: the Eastern Alps will be under the influence of an Italian low and its band of clouds on Friday. Overall, dense clouds will predominate in all parts of the country. There will also be widespread and persistent rain or snow, although most of it will fall south of the main Alpine ridge and in south-eastern Austria.

The snow line varies greatly. While it mostly snows in the north-east of the country, the snow line in the west and south is currently between 800 and 1500 metres above sea level. As a result of freezing rain at lower altitudes, parts of Lower Carinthia, southern Styria, and the eastern edge of the Alps can also expect icy conditions. The wind will blow from various directions and will blow weakly to moderately, even briskly in the mountains. After minus four to plus three degrees in the morning, temperatures will rise to one to six degrees during the day.

Saturday: Snow down to low altitudes
Austria is under the influence of an upper Italian low that is slowly moving eastwards. With dense clouds, it will snow widely, and there may be sleet or rain in the inner Alps and south of the main Alpine ridge below seven to nine hundred metres in the beginning. Colder air will persist further north and north-east, and snow will fall to low altitudes. During the afternoon, the snowfall will slowly subside and the clouds will clear. A brisk or sometimes strong westerly to northerly wind will blow in the north and north-east, adding to the feeling of cold. Early temperatures are minus six to plus one, and daytime highs are minus three to plus four degrees.
Sunday up to minus ten degrees
A few residual clouds will clear quickly in the morning. Otherwise, a very sunny and wintry cold day is forecast. The wind will be mostly light, with only the eastern region experiencing moderate west winds at first. Frosty cold in the morning, with temperatures ranging from minus ten to minus four degrees. Daytime highs range from -4 to +1 degrees.
