“There hasn’t been as much snow at low altitudes in Austria in December as there is at the moment,” explained climatologist Alexander Orlik on Monday.

The icy temperatures in Austria are here to stay, as it will remain extremely wintry in the coming days. “There hasn’t been as much snow at low altitudes in Austria in December as there is at the moment for a long time,” said Orlik from Geosphere Austria (formerly ZAMG) on Monday. Bregenz, Innsbruck, and Salzburg currently have around 20 centimeters of snow. “The last time it was more in December here was in 2014.”

21 centimetres of snow on Hoher Warte
There were 21 centimeters of snow on the Hohe Warte in Vienna on Sunday, compared to 17 centimeters on Monday. The last time there was more snow at this location on a December day was in 2010, with 24 centimetres. St. Pölten also had ten centimetres of white splendor, with twelve centimetres more snow than in December 2010.

In Graz (two centimetres), Eisenstadt, and Klagenfurt (both currently five centimetres), on the other hand, the last time there was more snow was in December last year.

Low temperatures
In general, many regions in the north and east of the country have not been this cold in December for several years. “For example, the last time there was a lower temperature in December in Vienna, Hohe Warte, and St. Pölten was 13 years ago, in Linz eleven years ago, and in Eisenstadt nine years ago,” said climatologist Orlik.

The Linz City weather station recorded minus 10.8 degrees on Monday. The last time it was colder on a December day was in 2012, with minus 10.9 degrees. St. Pölten reported minus 11.5 degrees; in the same period in 2010, it was colder at minus 12.4 degrees. The thermometer in Vienna, Hohe Warte, dropped to minus nine degrees at the beginning of the week. By comparison, the last time it was even icier in the Austrian capital was in December 2010 at minus 10.5 degrees. In Eisenstadt, minus 7.6 degrees was measured on Monday; the last time it was colder on a December day was in 2014 with minus 9.5 degrees.

However, according to Geosphere, the current temperatures are not unusual for Bregenz, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Graz, and Klagenfurt. The last time it was colder here in December was last year.

Snow possible
In the coming days, it may continue to snow a little, especially in the west and north of Austria. It may also rain at low altitudes. Occasionally, black ice is possible due to freezing rain. According to the experts’ forecast, temperatures on Tuesday will be between minus nine and minus one degree in the morning and between minus three and five degrees in the afternoon.

It may snow a little everywhere on Wednesday. Rain or freezing rain is also possible at low altitudes. In the morning, temperatures will mostly be between minus six and one degree, and in the afternoon, between minus one and five degrees.

On Thursday, it will be a little colder in most of Austria, but also quite sunny. Clouds are likely to predominate in the east, bringing some snowfall and rain below about 300 meters.
