When it comes to predicting the Christmas weather, meteorologists have rarely been so divided as this year: anything is possible.
Only in the ski resorts is a white Christmas very likely; in the lowlands and in almost all provincial capitals, snow at Christmas is rather unlikely.
After four days of sun and spring, it will begin to rain in the western ski resorts on Wednesday. Rain is also forecast for Thursday, from Kitzbühel to Schladming. There will be significant differences in weather and temperature for the Christmas holidays between the western and eastern halves of Austria.
Friday, 22.12.: The first snow
Just in time for Christmas, temperatures plummet in the west, and it snows heavily from Arlberg to Schladming. The temperature drops to minus 3 degrees during the night.
Saturday, 23.12.: Snow before Christmas
This could be a small Christmas miracle: in the west of Austria, from Arlberg to Schladming, it’s supposed to snow heavily on Saturday, the day before Christmas. Snow is expected to fall in Innsbruck and Salzburg, with night-time temperatures of minus 4 and 2 degrees during the day, and may even stick around.
Sunday, 24.12.: Sunshine and 4°
On September 24, the sun will shine in the west during the day, and Christmas Eve will remain dry with temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees. No snow, but no rain either.
Monday, 25 to Tuesday, 27.12: Dry
Christmas Day will be unspectacular. It will be mostly sunny, with temperatures between 3 and 6 degrees.
So there will be a white Christmas almost everywhere in the ski resorts. Whether Innsbruck and Salzburg experience a white Christmas will depend on whether the little snowfall on Christmas Eve—on Saturday, December 23rd—remains or thaws away at plus 4 degrees just on Christmas Eve.
In the east
Friday, 22.12.: Rain instead of snow
While the west can hope for snowfall on Friday and Saturday before Christmas, there is a high probability of rain and plus 6 degrees in Vienna on Friday, December 22 and Saturday, December 23.
Sunday, 24.12.: Sunny and spring-like
Christmas Eve will be rather spring-like in the east. It will be sunny and up to 11 degrees plus, but it will also be stormy. There is no chance of snow or a white Christmas.
Monday, 25.12.: Sunny and stormy
Christmas Day (December 25) will also be sunny but stormy with a plus 9 degree. A spring-like but very windy Christmas awaits the Viennese and eastern Austrians.
Tuesday, 26.12.: It stays warm
The weather will remain in the plus degrees on St. Stephen’s Day. Plus, it’s 10 degrees cloudy—no chance of a white Christmas!
