If you’re still waiting for your 2023 climate bonus, it’s finally coming. The bonus for 2024 will only be available in the fall.
In 2024, you will again receive a climate bonus from the state, but payment will not start until the fall. Nevertheless, around 500,000 people in Austria will receive a climate bonus starting in February. These people still don’t have the climate bonus for 2023 and are only now getting their chance.
If you missed the 2023 climate bonus, you did not meet the requirements by the July 2, 2023, deadline. Everyone who has had their main residence in Austria for at least six months, or 183 days in the year of eligibility, is entitled to the climate bonus, regardless of citizenship and age. This means anyone who moved to Austria in the first half of 2023 had not completed the required registration days by the beginning of July.
People who moved within Austria in the first six months of 2023 were also in the climate bonus waiting loop because it was only possible to determine where most people resided in Austria in 2023 at the end of the year. If this is the case for you, you will only receive your bonus for the previous year in February.
The 2023 climate bonus has been staggered regionally; depending on your residence, the climate bonus is 110, 150, 185, or 220 euros. The connection to the public transportation network determines the regional gradation.
Children also get the bonus, but only half of it. The bonus will only be paid out for babies born in the first half of 2023.
There will be another climate bonus for 2024. According to the Climate Ministry, the amount has not yet been determined and will be fixed in the first half of the year. As the bonus is intended to cushion the new CO2 tax, which was increased again on January 1, 2024, the climate bonus for this year could possibly be slightly higher than last year. According to rumors, it could be a maximum of 300 euros.
The 2024 climate bonus will be paid out again in the fall. If you are one of those who are only now receiving their bonus for 2023, you will probably receive the climate bonus twice this year.
