Some people eat an apple so that only the woody stem remains. Whether you want to eat the core or not is a matter of taste. On the other hand, there is also the myth that apple cores can be poisonous. However, this is only partly true, according to the Federal Center for Nutrition.

Fact: Apple seeds contain amygdalin, which is converted into hydrocyanic acid in the body. But this substance is only released when the seeds are bitten into and eaten in very large quantities. Because the seeds taste unpleasantly bitter when chewed, poisoning is quite unlikely. And if they are not chewed, they are excreted in the same way.

Casing provides fiber
However, the shell itself is very healthy because it contains a lot of fiber, which is good for digestion. It, therefore, makes nutritional and ecological sense for all those who like to eat the core. The only exception is that apples are rarely affected by core rot, which develops during blossoming and is immediately visible when the fruit is cut open.

According to the Federal Center for Nutrition, most of the vitamins and phytochemicals are actually found in or directly under the skin of the apple, so it makes sense to eat the fruit unpeeled.
