Extended weekend weather: High ‘Thomas’ brings higher temperatures again

The changeable weather of the past few days ends just in time for the long weekend. According to the Ubimet weather service, high-pressure system ‘Thomas’ is bringing in dry air from north-east Europe, and temperatures are rising again to early summer levels.

In the past 24 hours, a low-pressure system over the northern Mediterranean has brought a lot of moisture to the Alpine region, with significant amounts of rain falling particularly around the Koralpe and generally in the western, northern Alps. Since Tuesday morning, for example, around 54 litres/m² have been recorded in Eibiswald, near the border with Slovenia.

Already friendlier on public holidays
On public holidays, the aforementioned low-pressure system will move further into the southern Mediterranean and, therefore, lose its influence on our weather. Instead, the extended high-pressure system ‘Thomas’ will increasingly take over. Ascension Day will, therefore, be increasingly friendly. Sunshine will dominate throughout the day, especially in the east, with a few clouds lingering from Vorarlberg to the Salzkammergut at the beginning and a few drops falling in the northern Alps in the early morning hours. As the day progresses, it will gradually clear up there, too, and it will remain dry everywhere. Temperatures will rise to between 15 and 22 degrees.

From Friday to Sunday, inclusive, there will be plenty of sunshine to enjoy across most of the country. Only harmless clouds will often pass through, with a little more in the country’s eastern half. It will remain dry across the country on Friday and Saturday before a weak low-pressure system from the Waldviertel to Carinthia increases the tendency for showers and thunderstorms on Sunday. All days will see early summer highs of 18 to 26 degrees.
