When a credit card is debited, it depends on the card type. Four different types of cards are commonly used in Austria:

Charge card as a classic credit card: With this credit card, you receive a credit card statement once a month that collects all transactions. The debit is made promptly with the credit card statement.

Revolving card: The revolving card is also a classic credit card where you receive a statement once a month. You decide whether you pay the amount in one lump sum or installments.

Debit card: Similar to the Girocard, transactions are debited promptly. The amount is debited a few days after you have made your transactions.
Prepaid card: A prepaid card is not debited because it is a credit card with a credit balance. You must top up credit and can no longer use the card if no more credit is available. Debt is not possible with a prepaid card.

Debit periods for the classic credit card
As a rule, you will receive a credit card statement once a month with a charge card as a classic credit card. When exactly the debit is made depends on the respective bank. Information on this can be found in the bank’s general terms and conditions.

With some banks, you can also choose whether to be debited weekly, monthly, or only every two months. However, there are only a few banks that charge weekly or bi-monthly.

Revolving card and repayment in installments
If a bank offers a revolving card, you can decide whether to repay your purchases in installments. In most cases, monthly installments are debited. Debit interest is charged on the unpaid amounts, which varies from bank to bank. Especially if you frequently pay with your credit card, you risk losing track of installment payments.
