Whether the Finns are the happiest people in the world has already been debated. The annual World Happiness Report claims the former, while a Swedish study claims the opposite. Be that as it may, according to the findings of the London-based Institute of Quality of Life and its Happy City Index, Helsinki is not the city with the happiest inhabitants in the world, but Aarhus in Denmark. Although the Finnish capital doesn’t do too badly either, it is ranked 6th, Vienna is 14th, Innsbruck is 29th, and Graz is 48th. 250 cities worldwide with at least 300,000 inhabitants were surveyed.
Quality of life
Essentially, the study makers are trying to make a subjective feeling attainable. And they themselves seem to know this is not quite easy because happiness ultimately depends on numerous factors. In addition to objective information and various publicly available data, the analysis was also based on interviews with residents, as stated on the institute’s website: “This process enabled us to differentiate and thus evaluate the cities based on 24 different areas, divided into five key categories.” Key categories include the environment, economy and mobility.
The Happy City Index is not intended to be a conventional ranking. Instead, the aim is to highlight those cities that have made a particular contribution to the quality of life of their citizens. Incidentally, Johannesburg in South Africa comes last.
