Almost every driver is familiar with the two indentations on the vehicle’s fuel filler cap. However, only very few know what purpose they serve.
If you fill up your car regularly, you will probably have noticed the two indentations on the tank cap. At first glance, their purpose is not obvious. However, the notches can be extremely useful when refuelling.
Notches on the fuel filler cap: this is their purpose
In short, these notches allow you to attach the fuel filler cap to the fuel filler flap. You clamp the cap to the flap using the notches. However, you should be careful with older vehicles, as the plastic or rubber coating of the notches is often very hard. This can damage the paintwork of the flap if you press the cover too hard.
Once you get the hang of it, this use of the notches proves to be very practical. There is no risk of putting the fuel filler cap on the car roof and forgetting it later. If the fuel filler cap has an attached tab, you also avoid the risk of the hanging cap damaging the paintwork of the car body.
So you always know which side the fuel filler cap is on
A typical problem for drivers is forgetting which side the fuel filler cap is on. After all, this can vary depending on the vehicle. However, you don’t have to get out of the car to find out whether the fuel filler cap is on the left or right side of your vehicle. There is a small arrow in the cockpit of the car.
The arrow shows which side the gas cap is on. So, if the triangle is shown to the left of the gasoline pump, the fuel filler cap is on the driver’s side. If the arrowhead is pointing to the right, you should stand to the left of the fuel pump. Unfortunately, this useful information is not available in every car.
