Filipinos in Austria celebrated the 126th Philippine Independence Day with a range of activities highlighting their rich cultural heritage and national pride. The celebration provided a platform for the Filipino community in Austria to come together, fostering a sense of unity and cultural connection while commemorating the historic day when the Philippines declared its independence from Spanish rule on June 12, 1898.
Organized by the Council of Filipino Associations in Austria (CFAA) in cooperation with the Philippine Embassy, the event took place on June 15, 2024, at the prestigious Marriott Hotel in Vienna. The theme of the Independence Day ball, “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.” beautifully encapsulated the essence of the celebration. It highlighted the freedom that our forefathers fought for, the future they envisioned for our country, and the history that we strive to honour and remember. It served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by our ancestors and the responsibility we have to uphold the legacy of independence.
The presence of the Ambassador, Hon. Evangelina Lourdes Arroyo-Bernas, added a sense of importance to the occasion. As the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Philippines to Austria, with concurrent jurisdiction over the Republic of Croatia, the Republic of Slovenia, and the Slovak Republic, she emphasized the significance of unity and community among Filipinos both in Austria and back in the Philippines. In her address, Ambassador Arroyo-Bernas commended the CFAA for its inspiring humanitarian work in the Philippines. She encouraged her fellow Filipinos to continue their active participation in nation-building and to take pride in their heritage. Her words resonated deeply with the attendees, inspiring a sense of pride and patriotism.
“I want to pay tribute to the Filipino community here because, because of your expertise and hard work, you uplift the lives and the quality of life of Austrian society. But at the same time, you contribute to the development of the Philippines, and for that, we owe you a great deal. We are ever in your debt and in your service,” the ambassador said.
Ray Arreza, chairman of the Council of Filipino Associations in Austria (CFAA), thanked the Filipino community in Austria for its support of the events and programs of the CFAA.
“As we revel in the festivities, let us also acknowledge the strength and resilience of the Filipino community here in Austria. Our journey away from home has not always been easy, but we have thrived, supported one another, and made significant contributions to our host country. Our unity, hard work, and vibrant culture continue to make a positive impact, and for that, we should be immensely proud. Tonight, let us celebrate not only our freedom but also our shared values and dreams. Let us embrace the opportunity to strengthen our bonds, cherish our traditions, and create new memories together. This ball is a testament to our enduring spirit and our commitment to preserving and promoting our cultural heritage, no matter where we are in the world,” Arreza said.
Elmer Blanco, President of the Global Save Life Foundation and CFAA Adviser, extended his heartfelt thanks to everyone who worked tirelessly to make the event possible.
“Your dedication and passion are truly commendable. To all our guests, thank you for joining us and being a part of this celebration. As we enjoy the evening filled with music, dance, let us carry the spirit of independence and unity in our hearts. Let us be reminded of our collective strength and our shared vision for a brighter future for all Filipinos,” Blanco said.
The highlight of the PIDC Ball was the Rigodon de Honor, a captivating presentation by the leaders of various member organizations of CFAA. Dory Aigner and Thess Waitzbauer skillfully choreographed the dance, while Carmen Pacaigue led the Rigodon de Honor Committee.
The Independence Day ball was more than just a social event; it was a moment of reflection, gratitude, and celebration. It served as a reminder of the resilience and strength of the Filipino community, both in Austria and beyond. As the festivities came to a close, the spirit of camaraderie and unity lingered in the air, reminding everyone of the importance of coming together to honor our past, shape our future, and celebrate our shared history.
