Autumn is showing its first signs of life, reports the Austrian Severe Weather Center (UWZ).
Austria lies on the edge of a low over Western Europe called “Yonca” at the weekend. A southerly current will bring warm, humid air masses into the country, and temperatures will rise again to midsummer levels. “From Sunday evening, the influence of low pressure will increase in Austria, and the new week will bring unsettled and early fall weather,” says Nikolas Zimmermann, UWZ meteorologist.
Up to 31 degrees again at the weekend
On Saturday, sunshine will mostly dominate. Only south of the Tauern mountains will be high fog-like clouds at the beginning. Temperatures will reach 25 to 31 degrees. The sun will continue to shine frequently in the north and east on Sunday, but the clouds will thicken from Vorarlberg to Upper Carinthia during the second half of the day, and the tendency for thunderstorms will increase. “The maximum temperatures from west to east will be between 22 and 31 degrees, and the eastern lowlands will probably see the last hot day of the year,” says the meteorologist. During the night, rain and thunderstorms will spread across the country.
10-degree drop in temperature
The new week begins cloudy and often wet, with heavy rain and thunderstorms in the south and southeast. However, even in the lowlands, large amounts of rain are on the horizon again after a long dry spell. Temperatures will drop noticeably and reach an appropriate level for the time of year: highs on Monday will only be between 17 and 23 degrees. The sun will also be scarce in the following days; the unsettled weather will continue, and temperatures will fall slightly. Highs in the lowlands will hover around the 20-degree mark.
All-time record for tropical nights
September got off to an exceptionally warm start this year, with the first week being 5 to 7 degrees warmer than the long-term average in many places. Several new station records were set, particularly in the east, and there were further tropical nights with a low of at least 20 degrees in Vienna and Linz, among other places. “In Vienna city center, every night in September has been a tropical night so far. Since the beginning of the year, there have already been 52, further extending the all-time record for Austria,” says Zimmermann. The old annual record was 41 tropical nights.
