That’s it for the long summer: it’s getting autumnal and cool

Today, Monday, summer, and sunshine will end: according to meteorologists, the weather will turn seamlessly into fall overnight, with temperatures dropping by at least ten degrees.

According to the weather service Ubimet, the reason for this is a low-pressure system called “Yonca,” which has a southerly current. Warm and humid air masses initially reached the country, causing temperatures to rise again to midsummer levels.

“From Sunday evening, however, the influence of low pressure will increase in Austria,” explains meteorologist Nikolas Zimmermann. “The new week will bring unsettled and early fall weather.” Rain and thunderstorms will spread to large parts of the country as early as Monday night.

The expert predicts that the new week—the first week of school for Carinthia, Salzburg, Upper Austria, Vorarlberg, Tyrol, and Styria—will begin cloudy and often wet. Heavy rain will also fall in the south and southeast, and thunderstorms are also possible in some regions.

It will be much cooler
Zimmermann predicts temperatures will drop “noticeably” but will settle down to a suitable level for early September: the daily highs on Monday will only be between 17 and 23 degrees.
The sun will also make itself scarce on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the unsettled weather will continue—and it will be a touch cooler. The daily highs will no longer exceed 20 degrees. The outlook for Thursday is not much different, and Friday will be even cooler. From the current perspective, the daily highs will be just twelve degrees, with precipitation on and off.

Record year for tropical nights
This is all the more noticeable now that September – the meteorological start of autumn – got off to a midsummer start: “In many places, the first week of the month was five to seven degrees warmer than the long-term average,” reports meteorologist Zimmermann. In Vienna and Linz, there were even tropical nights when it was at least 20 degrees.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 52 tropical nights in Austria this year, making 2024 a record year.
