A strong low-pressure system will bring heavy rainfall, gale-force winds and sometimes heavy snowfall, which could massively increase the risk of avalanches and snowfall, especially in mountainous regions. Extreme caution is required! The development of the weather situation must continue to be monitored closely.

Heavy rain and storm warning for Lower Austria and the Czech Republic
According to the latest calculations by GeoSphere Austria, precipitation will remain extremely high. Heavy rainfall can quickly lead to flooding in Lower Austria and the neighboring Czech Republic. The models show the highest precipitation values here, and the snow line, which binds the precipitation in other regions, offers little relief here.

Gusts of wind create additional danger
In addition to the intense rainfall, strong westerly to north-westerly winds pose further dangers. Stormy gusts are expected, especially at higher altitudes, which, in combination with the precipitation, will increase the risk of damage and traffic obstructions.

Avalanche risk and snowfall in the Alps
Austria’s mountain regions are set to experience a significant onset of winter. Massive snow drifts at high altitudes lead to a significantly increased risk of avalanches. GeoSphere Austria issues an urgent warning against spending time in the high mountains. The snow line is also dropping in the inner Alpine regions, in some cases down to low altitudes, which greatly increases the risk of snow breakage in particular.

The second wave of precipitation is possible on Monday
GeoSphere Austria also points out that the weather situation remains critical. A second wave of precipitation could arrive from the north next Monday, again bringing large amounts of rain despite uncertain forecasts. This development must also be carefully monitored, as it could further exacerbate the existing dangers. GeoSphere Austria recommends regularly monitoring the latest weather warnings.
