VIENNA — The Filipino Catholic community in Vienna gathered on Saturday, September 19, 2026, for a special celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia, bringing together around 300 devotees aboard the MS Tegetthoff near the Reichsbrücke for a day of faith, Marian devotion, thanksgiving and Filipino community spirit.
The annual Danube River celebration, organized by the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy in Vienna, once again brought to Austria a distinctive expression of the centuries-old Filipino devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, or Ina Peñafrancia.
Procession, Rosary and Marian Hymns
The celebration began at around 7:30 a.m. with a short procession carrying the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia to the vessel. The devotees then gathered in prayer, reciting the Holy Rosary and singing Marian hymns led by the Our Lady of Peñafrancia Choir.
The atmosphere aboard the MS Tegetthoff reflected the deep devotion of Filipino Catholics to Ina, while the Danube provided a unique setting for the annual celebration.
At 9:30 a.m., the Holy Mass began with Most Rev. Cyril Buhayan Villareal, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Kalibo, as the main celebrant. He was joined by Filipino Catholic chaplains in Vienna and other Filipino priests as concelebrants.
Bishop Villareal’s participation was particularly significant. He previously served the Filipino Catholic community in Vienna as an assistant chaplain while pursuing his studies in moral theology at the University of Vienna. In January 2026, Pope Leo XIV appointed him Bishop of Kalibo, and he was ordained bishop and installed on April 23, 2026.
His return to Vienna as a bishop gave the celebration a special character, bringing him together once again with a community he had served years earlier.
Philippine Ambassador Joins Celebration
The celebration was also attended by H.E. Evangelina Lourdes Arroyo Bernas, Ambassador of the Philippines to Austria, who joined the Filipino faithful in honoring Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
In her message, Ambassador Bernas congratulated the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy for its continued efforts to preserve and promote this important Filipino religious tradition in Austria. The annual celebration, she noted, serves not only as an expression of faith but also as a way of keeping Filipino cultural and religious traditions alive among Filipinos living abroad.
Her presence underscored the importance of the Peñafrancia celebration as an occasion that brings together faith, Filipino identity and community life.
Gratitude from the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy
Fr. Ely Dalanon, Chaplain of the Filipino Catholic community in Vienna, expressed his gratitude to the Filipino Catholic community for its continued support and participation in the celebration.
He thanked the devotees, priests, religious organizations, volunteers and community members whose cooperation helps make the annual Danube pilgrimage possible.
The celebration demonstrated once again the strong community support behind the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy and its continuing efforts to provide opportunities for Filipino Catholics in Austria to celebrate their faith and traditions together.
St. Lorenzo Ruiz Foundation Director Delivers Message
Also present at the celebration was Dr. Alexander Kraljić, Managing Director (Geschäftsführer) and head of the St. Lorenzo Ruiz Foundation (St. Lorenzo Ruiz-Stiftung) in the Archdiocese of Vienna.
Dr. Kraljić delivered an inspirational message to the Filipino community, highlighting the significance of faith, community and the continuing relationship between Filipino Catholics and the Archdiocese of Vienna.
His participation further reflected the close cooperation between the Filipino Catholic community and the Archdiocese of Vienna.
A Milestone for the Our Lady of Peñafrancia Choir
The celebration was particularly meaningful for the Our Lady of Peñafrancia Choir, which accompanied the liturgical services throughout the feast.
For the choir members, the celebration marked another important milestone: the 10th anniversary of the choir.
Although the choir takes its name and spiritual inspiration from the Bicolano devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, its membership extends far beyond the Bicol region. Most of its members come from different regions of the Philippines, reflecting the diversity of the Filipino Catholic community in Vienna. United by their love for music and their desire to serve the Church, they have come together to contribute their talents to liturgical celebrations and Marian devotion.
Under the direction of its conductress and director, Ophelia Magistrado-Cortez, the choir has accompanied liturgical celebrations of the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy and, in particular, the annual Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia for the past ten years.
The choir’s ministry has become a bridge between faith, music and Filipino community life, demonstrating how a devotion rooted in one region of the Philippines can bring together Filipinos from different backgrounds and regions in a shared expression of faith.
Following the Danube River procession, past and present choir members gathered at a restaurant in central Vienna for a simple 10th anniversary celebration. The gathering gave members an opportunity to reconnect, share memories and give thanks for a decade of music ministry and service.
For the choir, the anniversary was not only a celebration of ten years of singing together, but also a celebration of the friendships, faith and sense of community that have grown through their shared ministry.
From Bicol and from many other parts of the Philippines, the members of the choir have found a common home in Vienna—singing together in honor of Ina Peñafrancia and serving the wider Filipino Catholic community.
Faith and Filipino Tradition on the Danube
The Peñafrancia celebration in Vienna is inspired by the famous fluvial procession in Naga City, where thousands of devotees annually accompany the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia along the Bicol River. The devotion has also become an important expression of Filipino faith among communities living overseas.
In Vienna, the tradition has taken on its own distinctive form, with Filipino devotees gathering aboard a Danube vessel to pray, celebrate the Eucharist and honor Ina Peñafrancia.
The annual pilgrimage has become a cherished occasion for Filipino families, organizations and Catholic communities to come together in faith and fellowship.
The celebration on September 19 brought together approximately 300 devotees in an atmosphere of prayer, thanksgiving and community spirit.
For the Filipino Catholic community in Vienna, the day was not simply a religious celebration. It was also a powerful expression of Filipino identity and devotion—showing how traditions carried from the Philippines continue to flourish on the banks of the Danube.
As the faithful concluded the celebration, the spirit of the day could be summed up in the traditional cry of devotion:
Viva La Virgen! Viva Ina Peñafrancia! 🌹🙏
The annual celebration once again demonstrated the enduring devotion of Filipino Catholics to Our Lady of Peñafrancia and the continuing commitment of the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy to preserve Filipino religious traditions in Austria.
