Austrians drink around 2.6 cups of coffee every day. This corresponds to around 1,000 cups or 145 liters per year. The different brewing methods have advantages and disadvantages—and not just in terms of taste. But which preparation method is healthier – filter coffee or espresso? The answer: it depends…

The advantages of filter coffee
Filter coffee has been making a comeback for some years now—not only because of its taste but also because of its health benefits. The substances cafestol and kahweol, which increase LDL cholesterol in the blood, remain in the paper filter. With espresso, on the other hand, these substances, which are considered harmful, pass through the coarse sieve into the drink. Filter coffee is, therefore, more suitable for people with high cholesterol levels.
A study from the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology (April 2020) examined 500,000 Norwegians aged 20 to 79 for 20 years. The results showed that filter coffee reduced the risk of death by 15 per cent compared to not drinking coffee. The lowest mortality was found with a consumption of one to four cups of filter coffee per day.

A second study by the Universities of Gothenburg and Umeå (2019) also found that two cups of filter coffee a day reduced the risk of diabetes by 60 percent. Other preparation methods did not show this effect.

The benefits of espresso

But not everything speaks against espresso. An espresso contains less acid, as the beans are roasted longer and are, therefore, easier to digest. Although cafestol and kahweol may increase cholesterol levels, some studies suggest they also have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties and promote liver health.
Conclusion: filter coffee or espresso?
The good news: both variants have health benefits. Filter coffee appears to reduce the risk of death and diabetes and is particularly suitable for people with high cholesterol levels. Espresso is more suitable for people with a sensitive stomach and could protect the liver. A study published in October 2020 also shows that drinking coffee can protect people with a genetic predisposition to Parkinson’s from the onset of the nerve-related movement disorder. The darker the roast, the better, they say.

Nevertheless, nutrition experts only recommend drinking the hot drink in moderation. A maximum of 4 cups a day is considered healthy.
