There is an increasing number of attempted telephone scams in parts of Austria. The callers pretend to be official representatives of the authorities.

Due to current events in the field of telephone fraud, the Tyrol Provincial Police Directorate feels compelled to publish a “special press release.”

“Fraud calls are currently being made in the districts of Innsbruck and Innsbruck-Land. Fraudsters pretend to be police officers or court officials on the phone and try to lure out cash and valuables. Protect yourself and warn your relatives,” warns the police.

Similar incidents had already occurred in Tyrol at the end of August. Now the police are issuing an urgent warning about this scam.

This form of fraud is also going around in Carinthia. On Thursday evening, the Carinthia police reported that an 80-year-old woman had fallen victim to this scam. The woman from Klagenfurt was contacted by telephone on October 7 by an alleged police officer.

The police officer stated that he had to check counterfeit money. For this purpose, the woman was told to deposit a large amount of cash under the garbage can in front of her home address. The policeman would then collect the money from there. The woman deposited several thousand euros under the garbage can, which were finally taken by unknown perpetrators. She has now filed a complaint.
