Will the long weekend bring the onset of winter to Austria? At least, past forecasts suggest so. GeoSphere Austria explains what the weather change will ultimately look like.
Autumn is currently pleasantly mild. The high fog usually disappears during the course of the day and makes way for the sun. According to past forecasts, the weather should have changed significantly from All Saints’ Day. “The Alpine region is likely to be flooded with cold air from the north-east. A drop in temperature of 15 degrees is to be expected on the mountains,” said GeoSphere Austria last week. There was also talk of snow down to low altitudes. Now everything is different. As is so often the case with forecasts, the outlook for the All Saints’ weekend has changed significantly. “Whereas a few days ago, a cold spell of air from the north with snow down to low altitudes was announced for the coming weekend, today there is no sign of the onset of winter over Central Europe in the weather models,” says GeoSphere Austria.
A change in the weather is therefore not in sight. But what kind of weather can we expect over the long weekend? GeoSphere Austria summarizes: “Strong high-pressure influence with partly thick fog in the lowlands and lots of sunshine in the mountains will continue unabated. Temperatures will fall in the east at the weekend but will remain above average in the west.”
What the weather will be like in the coming days
The calm autumn weather will continue in the coming days. On Thursday, temperatures will range between 11 and 17 degrees. In the north and east, as well as in the Danube region, fog and high fog patches will characterize the morning, as well as basin areas in the south. In many regions, the mist will clear by midday, but in some cases, not until the afternoon. The west and the mountains will be sunny early on. The same picture will be seen in Austria on All Saints’ Day, November 1. The north, the Danube region, and the basin areas in the south will start the day with fog. In the other regions, it will be sunny and mild. According to current forecasts from GeoSphere Austria, the highest temperatures on Friday will be between 11 and 19 degrees.
Saturday: Fog in the morning, sun in the afternoon
For Saturday, GeoSphere Austria forecasts: “In the west and south, the sun will shine throughout, except for a few patches of fog. In the north and east, however, denser cloud fields will move through from the north and bring localized light rain. The snow line will drop to 1,500 meters. In the afternoon, it will start to clear up again from the northeast; later, it will clear up again, especially in the Weinviertel.” With daily highs between 9 and 18 degrees, it will be warmest in the west.
What is the forecast for Sunday?
After fog in the morning in the west and south, it will clear up in many places. In the north and east, we can expect a largely cloud-free day. Light frost is possible on Sunday morning, especially in Lower Austria and Mariazellerland. Temperatures will reach highs of 6 to 15 degrees, with the lower temperatures in the north and east.
