Which countries are top donors, particularly helpful, or heavily involved in voluntary work? The “World Giving Index,” one of the world’s most comprehensive studies on charity and donation behavior, provides the answers. Published by the British Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), the index evaluates 142 countries in three categories: willingness to help strangers, willingness to donate, and volunteering. The data comes from surveys conducted by the US market and opinion research institute Gallup.
Indonesia is the most generous country in the world
For the seventh time in a row, Indonesia tops the index of the most generous countries. An impressive 90 percent of respondents stated they had donated money—a top score. Indonesia is also in first place regarding volunteering: more than 60 percent of respondents are active volunteers.
Kenya scored particularly highly for its willingness to help strangers, while Singapore shone in the desire to donate category and made it into the top 5. Remarkable: Singapore jumped 19 places in the ranking. The rise is due to government initiatives that promote both donations and volunteering.

Austria ranks 32nd out of 142 countries. According to the survey, 52% of respondents said they had helped a stranger. 62 percent donated money, while 24 percent volunteered.

Morocco and Greece are the biggest climbers
Morocco recorded the largest increase in donations worldwide compared to the previous year. The surveys occurred after the devastating earthquakes that shook the country’s center in September 2023. In 2022, only two percent of people donated money to charity; last year it was 18 percent, and the number of volunteers doubled from 8 to 16 percent.
Greece is the biggest climber this year and has steadily improved its ranking since 2013. The figure for helping strangers is exceptionally high—well above the European average and especially high among young people.
