Freezing temperatures will follow stormy nights. “Increased cold temperatures are to be expected,” says GeoSphere. The thermometer is expected to show minus 15 degrees in some places at the weekend, at least in the morning.
Saturday, 11 January, will remain relatively “mild” during the day. Between Flachgau and central Burgenland, dense fields of cloud will continue to gather. “These will also bring a few snowflakes in the form of showers on the northern flanks of the mountains. In the west and south, it will be sunny and free of precipitation all day,” reads the GeoSphere weather forecast. In the north, however, there will be brisk winds. Early temperatures will be between minus 9 and 0 degrees. During the course of the day, they will rise to a maximum of plus 5 degrees.
Cold warning for Austria: minus 15 degrees in the morning, then the sun will come out
On Sunday, 12 January, however, it could be frosty. “The early morning temperatures will mostly be between minus 10 and minus 1 degree, in snow-covered Alpine valleys even below minus 15 degrees,” predict the GeoSphere meteorologists. Strong winds are also expected in the north and east, especially in more exposed locations. “The feeling of cold is often significantly exacerbated there,” say the experts. The maximum daily temperatures on Sunday are expected to be between minus 4 and plus 3 degrees. A few snowflakes can be expected in the northern congestion east of the Pongau. In the west and south, it should be mostly sunny and precipitation-free.
Weather on Monday: Cold weather persists
On Monday, 13 January, the weather is expected to improve, but it will still be cold at first. Temperatures of between minus 15 and minus 1 degrees are also expected here in the morning, “even lower in places in snow-covered valleys.” During the course of the day, temperatures of up to 2 degrees are possible. “In the west and south, it will be bright and sunny all day; in the eastern half of Austria and in the north, a few low cloud fields will still pass through, especially in the mountains of Upper and Lower Austria. It may still snow briefly and unproductively from time to time in the morning hours. However, from midday, the sun will mostly shine in these regions too,” the forecast continues. The wind is expected to be light to moderate.
Weather outlook for Tuesday: It’s getting warmer again
On Tuesday, 14 January, a warm front is approaching. “It will still be very sunny in the south, but in the north and east, the sun will be noticeably dimmed from midday,” predicts GeoSphere. The wind is only expected to blow weakly from different directions. However, frosty temperatures between minus 14 and minus 3 degrees are also expected in the morning. During the day, temperatures are expected to stiffen up to plus 6 “degrees—sometimes even more at medium altitudes.”
