A look into Austrians’ wallets reveals that Viennese and Vorarlbergers are the highest earners compared to federal states. The latest salary check also clearly shows the gap between men’s and women’s incomes.
Working Austrians earn an average of 49,121 euros gross per year, but salaries vary from province to province. This results from an evaluation by the employer rating platform kununu, which analyzed 181,000 salary data from the years 2023 and 2024.

Viennese and Vorarlbergers earn the highest salaries
According to the study, Viennese and Vorarlbergers earn the highest average salaries at EUR 51,127 and EUR 51,094, respectively, while Burgenlanders only receive EUR 45,019.

Regarding the 10 largest cities in Austria, Linz, with 51,278, is ahead of Vienna, Dornbirn, Graz, and Wels. St. Pölten, Salzburg, and Villach are in the midfield, while salaries in Innsbruck and Klagenfurt are the lowest in this comparison.

A wide gap between male and female salaries
The analysis also clearly shows the gap between men’s and women’s incomes. On average, women earn 43,599 euros per year, which is 8,839 euros less than their male colleagues, who earn 52,438 euros. The gap is also confirmed when looking at the salary slips of employees with personnel responsibility: here, the difference between the sexes is even higher, at 24 percent. Overall, managers earn an average of 58,818 euros per year.

Criticism of a lack of salary equality in the labor market
“Our figures show that there is still no salary equality in the Austrian labor market. This applies to the comparison between the genders and the regional comparison. One of the main reasons for this is the continued lack of salary transparency, which would offer employees significantly more guidance,” kununu CEO Nina Zimmermann was quoted as saying in a press release on Monday.

Top earners come from the IT and banking sectors
There are also clear differences across professions and sectors. The top earners are people with the title “professor,” with 90,027 euros gross per year, followed by business unit managers (84,439 euros) and doctors (84,352 euros). Other top earners include software architects, private bankers, and tax consultants. In terms of industries, the IT and banking sectors are in the lead.

The study took into account the salaries of full-time employees. Part-time employees and interns were not included in the analysis.
