Wholesale prices rose at the start of the year. According to preliminary calculations by Statistics Austria, there was an increase of 1.3% compared to January 2024. Compared to the previous month of December 2024, wholesale prices rose by 1.5%.

“After Austrian wholesalers mostly lowered their prices in 2024, we are seeing an increase again at the beginning of 2025,” said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas in a press release on Friday.

The slightly stronger price increase compared to the previous month can be explained, among other things, by the fact that some companies adjust their prices at the turn of the year rather than on an ongoing basis. In addition, the CO2 tax was increased at the beginning of January. Price trends vary greatly depending on the product group. While wholesale prices for watches and jewelry (+17.5 percent), coffee, tea, cocoa and spices (+12.9 percent) and non-alcoholic beverages (+11 percent) rose particularly sharply year-on-year, technical chemicals (-15.2 percent) and solid fuels (-15 percent) became noticeably cheaper.

In a monthly comparison, the statistics authority highlights “other petroleum products”, which became 8.4 percent more expensive. Prices for fruit, vegetables and potatoes also rose by an average of 5.3%. The price of motor gasoline (including diesel) rose by 5.1 percent. In contrast, metal construction elements and installation supplies (-2.5 percent), used and residual materials (-1.5 percent) and live animals (-1.4 percent) have become cheaper since December.
